Artist Statement

“I, myself, am made entirely of flaws, stitched together with good intentions.”

Augusten Burroughs

My art practice examines how we comprehend and value repair and how this notion correlates to the human imperative for perfection in both material things and ourselves.

Utilising a studio-based photographic process, combined with stitching interventions, I work to create photo objects that oscillate between photographic print and textile work. These formally constructed images leverage the historical genre of still-life and the traditional Japanese art of Kintsugi, also employing strategies to express temporality.

Additionally, I repurpose broken ceramics and timber fragments to create mixed media collage works and sculptures to further my investigation of this theme.

My artistic practice offers an exploration of how visible repair alters our understanding of an object or place by undermining our desire for perfection. I equate these broken things with the self and our preoccupation with perceived flaws and shortcomings. These images advocate for the acceptance and admiration of imperfection by creating new meaning out of injury and ruination.
